Merge duplicate email contacts with Gmail

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 09:24 AM PST

Gmail has introduced a new feature to make you email experience a little better (click here to read all Gmail related posts). Though many such new features often are not that interesting, this one helps you merge all duplicate contacts.

Ideally when someone sends you an email or you send an email, their email is added automatically into your contact list for Gmail. If you have friends who have two or even three email addresses they often are all stored.

Now with a click of a button such similar addresses can be merged.

First click on Contacts when you are on Gmail and you will get the option to Find duplicates as shown in image below.

A few moments later Gmail gives you a list of duplicate contacts. A simple click on Merge of the selected duplicate contacts will merge you duplicate contacts into single ones and help you organize the contact list better.

This is a great way to trim up on those annoying duplicate contacts and merge them. Just a note of caution in case you have two people with similar names in your contact list. In that case do look through the email addresses that would be merged.

Use Bookmarklet and Firefox addon for Goo.gl URL shortener

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 05:15 AM PST

I recently wrote about a how to use Google’s URL shortener service Goo.gl without any toolbars or extensions. To that post Matthew Flaschen commented about a couple of tools he has developed. They are a Firefox Addon and a bookmarklet to use Goo.gl. I quite liked them and hence here is the review.

Firefox Addon for Goo.gl

Goo.gl addon for Firefox without using Google toolbar

  • Click here to download the Firefox Addon for using Goo.gl URL shortener without using Google toolbar on Firefox.
  • Click on View >> Toolbars >> Customize. Here just drag and drop the Goo.gl addon to any toolbar on Firefox browser.
  • Next visit any page you want to share, click on the addon button and the short URL is copied. Simply paste it wherever you want to share it.
  • This does not work with the latest upgrade of Firefox 3.6 (Read about the upgrade here).

Why I liked this Add-on a lot is that I can simply click on the addon button and the url is copied. Most other short url generators create the url and make you copy it manually. Here I just had to paste it.

Firefox Bookmarklet

Another way to use Goo.gl url service is by using it through a bookmarklet. A bookmarklet is something which behaves like a toolbar when you click on it (Read about how Google brought Sidewiki into Chrome using Bookmarklets).

Bookmarklet for Goo.gl

  • Click here to get to the page of the Bookmarlet for Goo.gl.
  • Just drag and drop the link to your bookmarks tab.
  • When you visit a page click on the bookmark and the short Goo.gl url is shown.

I felt using the Firefox add-on a lot more friendly to use than using then bookmarklet. Anyways this is very useful for people who want to use Goo.gl url shortener without using Google toolbar on Firefox.

Let me know what you think about it through your comments.

Posted: 20 Dec 2009 09:25 PM PST

Today is another Monday morning and I just realized we have reached the last ten days of this year. We are still carrying out tests on the new DW redesign project. I can already see some of your suggestions being followed quite enthusiastically.

Monday 21 December

Subscribers are 7000 +

One very important thing I have to share with you as many of you visiting Devils Workshop might have noticed it that we have now crossed 7000 subscribers. This is quite satisfying personally as when I joined rtBlogs over three months ago we were around the 5000+ mark.

Top Posts

Finally I realized that next Monday would be the last one in this year. So with next Monday’s Top Posts I will include the posts you liked over the whole year. Let me know through your comments which were you favorite posts in the whole year and I will include the most popular ones on Top Posts list. Obviously the list would be much longer than 5. ;-)
