Get notifed by email if your website is down

Posted: 10 Dec 2009 09:52 AM PST

If you own a website you might have shared you own issues with having your website down. For a blogger this can also mean precious loss of traffic and subsequently a loss of revenue. Wasitup.com is one such website that monitors your website and sends you an email if it goes down.

Was it up? Email Notification

Features

  • Wasitup.com conducts a HTTP HEAD request and checks if the statud code is 200 OK. This means it checks if the page you have submitted is up and running.
  • If you specify a text within the url, it checks if the text is present or not in the HTTP body.
  • Once your website is down you receive an email. Your website is checked every 5 minutes. :-)
  • You can monitor upto 10 websites per account.

I think this would be quite useful for someone who is working part time as a blogger or might be away on vacation for a few days. Obviously at such times a email notification of the downtime would be greatly beneficial.

Let me know what do you think about Wasitup.com through your comments. :-)

Multiple platforms on a single mobile phone

Posted: 10 Dec 2009 03:18 AM PST

VMware is working on Mobile Phone (Particularly Smart Phone) Virtualization, which would be commercially available in near future.

As hardware of mobile phones is closing in on a Netbook, their software development is also progressing at the same pace.

In an interview to Computer World, Srinivas Krishnamurti, VMware's head of mobile phone virtualisation said the company's vision for virtualisation on smartphones went beyond the basic dual-boot prototypes.

They are also working on usage of multiple operating systems at the same time.

"We don't think dual booting will be good enough – we'll allow you to run both profiles at the same time and be able to switch between them by clicking a button," he said. "You'll be able to get and make calls in either profile – work or home – as they will both be live at any given point in time."

Also VMware has successfully demonstrated Android and Windows Mobile on a last generation smartphone with 128MB. (Nokia N800)

Pros: With implementation of this technology users can use Apps of all installed platforms. Thus Increasing Apps Base available to users. One can get advantages of all platforms, that to on cost of one Hardware.

Cons: Customer has to pay for license of Multiple Platforms along with VMware software.

Combination of this technology with dual sim devices would work well. It would be savior for people who need multiple smartphones. With just one hardware they can get benefits of two smartphones.

So what's your take???

Though it sounds pretty cool, do you think it would be really helpful???

A Dictionary for many languages launched by Google

Posted: 10 Dec 2009 12:54 AM PST

Google has got a lot of press and attention in the last few days thanks to it launching Google Public DNS. Amidst all the discussions about the pros and cons of Public DNS, Google has quietly released Google Dictionary.

Google Dictionary

  • It has some very good features and would be a extremely good tool for someone who is learning a new language. In the above image I searched for a slang word ‘Fanstastical
  • The results were very impressive. It showed me how the word was derived from Fanstastic. It also has support for translating these words from English to another language and vice versa.
  • If you are learning a new language like say German or French, you can simply type in the German word and select German Dictionary from the drop down and look up the word.
  • Just like we can mark an mail within Gmail as important with a star, the same principle has been extended with Dictionary. You can select star for the words you find important and can refer to them later on with using starred words.

Try out Google Dictionary and let me know what you think about it through your comments.
