Visual search with Google Goggles and its implications

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 05:34 PM PST

Just when everybody thought Android applications were nice but niche out comes Google with something truly revolutionary. The technology has existed but its application has been more or less nil. An Android application called Google Googles has captured a lot of attention of many gadget lovers.

Take pictures and search them with Google Goggles

About Google Goggles

  • Google Goggles is an application which can be used if your phone runs Android 1.6.
  • You can just point your mobile phone camera and take a snap of something you want to search.
  • Google will search and give results for the same. Just pointing the camera to certain local businesses gives you a prompt on the phone to look up information related to it. :-)

Check out Google Goggle’s video below

The implications of Google Goggles

  • The implication of Google Goggles is huge and the potential is almost limitless. This technology bundled with Google Maps or Google Earth could revolutionize map navigation even more than it has already.
  • For instance if you were driving in a unfamiliar city and were lost. Just a click an image and you would get an exact idea of where you are. If you were browsing through products in the supermarket and needed more exacting information about a brand, you could just take a pic and search the details with your phone.
  • Even more impressive yet controversial could be facial recognition. Take a picture and you might get the name of the person especially if someone has his or her pics online and are tagged.
  • This really opens a lot of doors for technology to be implemented in many ways we might not have anticipated. The best part for Google is the potential for revenues with this sort of technology if implemented on a large scale could be huge.

Let me know what you think about Google Goggles and how it would change search in the future through your comments.

Gmail meeting scheduler with Chrome browser

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 06:05 AM PST

Last month I wrote about a Firefox add-on which installs a meeting scheduler for Gmail. The meeting scheduler was pretty decent with a lot of options for scheduling a meeting and inviting others for the same. It was seamlessly integrated with Gmail.

Does you chrome have extensions?

Make sure your Chrome browser supports extensions. This means the browser has to be a beta version and not a stable version. Ideally you need to upgrade to Chrome 4 beta version. Download Chrome 4 from Google’s landing page for Chrome beta versions.

Meeting Scheduler with Gmail

Gmail meeting scheduler with chrome extensions

  • Downloading Scheduler extensions is quite easy. Just visit the Meeting Scheduler extensions page on ChromeExtensions.org.
  • Once installed log into Gmail account and you will see to the right hand side of your Gmail page a Meeting Scheduler box.
  • If you were using Meeting Scheduler with Firefox browser, it is synced with Chrome browser thanks to this extension.
  • Here you can create meetings, schedule them with simple drag and select option.
  • The meeting once scheduled can be emailed to your email account. It also has the option for syncing meeting scheduler with Google Calendar using your Google account. ;-)

If you were using Meeting Scheduler with Firefox giving it a try with Chrome Browser is worth a try. It seems a lot faster anyways.

Do let me know what you think about it through you comments.

How to Improve IE8 Self-protection in Windows 7?

Posted: 15 Dec 2009 02:57 AM PST

The IE homepage is changed by Trojan, though I have installed XX antivirus and this is a common problem for Windows users.

For this problem: Is there any thorough solution?

My answer: No.

The only good way to prevent the IE homepage from being changed by Trojan is not to visit the unknown source of websites or read email from unknown source.
Like other Windows versions, the self-contained IE8 of Windows 7 can not stop the problem of IE homepage being changed. However, we can fully develop the potential of Windows 7 to improve the self-protection of IE8.

The steps are as below:

  • Open Registry Editor to locate in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft
  • Then new build an item named as "Control Panel". The specific operation is: right-click Microsoft to choose "new build" "item" and then rename the item.
  • Now the location is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Control Panel
  • Next, right-click on the blank of the right side pane to create three 32 bit DWORD values and rename them as Settings, Links and SecAddSites. Assign "1" to each of them as shown below:

Improve IE8 self protection

  • At last, click OK to save the settings and exit.

I'd like to remind you that to set the system as the above steps can not guarantee the IE8 will not be changed. The above settings can only protect IE8 in a way. Any third party software including any antivirus is unable to promise the IE homepage will not be changed.
