Use Google URL shortener service Goo.gl without toolbars or extensions

Posted: 18 Dec 2009 08:00 AM PST

Google has recently launched its URL shortener service Goo.gl and it has got a lot of coverage. I was just doing to catching up with some blog reading and I found that it is full of excited praise for Goo.gl.

Goo.gl URL shortener should be quite a big thing, considering Google is big fish on the Internet. But currently it can be only used by using Google Toolbar if you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox. It also has support through an extension which can be installed on Chrome.

Feedburner can also be used to create short URL using Goo.gl but there is no website by Google where I could go to and use this service. That problem was solved thanks to a website I came across.

URL Shortener on website without using Google Toolbar and Extension

  • Gaigalas.net is a website which is run by Alexandre Gaigalas. Once at the website I could simply type in the URL I wanted and click on Shorten.
  • This created a short URL using Goo.gl.
  • This website is not run by Google and the service is still in testing mode. I used it to shorten DW URL and it works.

Do you know of any such services with respect to Goo.gl? Let me know through your comments.

Firefox 3.6 makes an upgrade to ramp up its performance

Posted: 18 Dec 2009 05:35 AM PST

Mozilla Firefox will be watched quite closely since now more than 1 in 4 people use the Firefox browser. The browser wars are back with Chrome browser leap frogging over Safari and is now the 3rd most used browser.

Firefox 3.6 beta version has had a new upgrade and I thought I would let your know what is new with this version. If you already have Firefox 3.6, the new upgrade will be done automatically from your browser. If you are using a version lower than Firefox 3.6 you might want to download it from their beta website.

Firefox 3.6 Beta upgrade

  • The new upgrade support HTML 5 File API. This means its possible for allowing user to select a local file using HTML. This means it can be done using HTML input element or using drag and drop.
  • Scripts will be run asynchronously which essentially makes the speed of the browser a lot faster. Even though I have not testing the browser for speed, but I did seem a marked difference in speed after I upgraded.
  • Firefox 3.6 will proactively alert you about out of date plugins.
  • It also promises better support for CSS, HTML5 and JavaScript.

I started using the upgraded browser and its been a few hours. I must say when opening multiple tabs I found it better than Chrome. I usually end up opening over 10 tabs. Also there has not been a single crash. :-)

It is still early days but it’s definite that Firefox will keep eating into Internet Explorer’s market share right through December.

Let me know if you have more details and interesting facts about Firefox 3.6 through your comments.

Save advanced search results with Google, Yahoo, Bing at one place

Posted: 18 Dec 2009 02:44 AM PST

Most times when we use search we do not need to use the Advanced Search options on any search engine. This is especially true for people looking to buy something online. But very often we end up using advanced search options for getting exact information which sometimes can be called niche.

Searchzooka is one such website which allows you to carry out advanced search using various search engines on the internet which includes Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, Digg, Technorati and Del.icio.us. What’s more is that you can save these results like a list.

Save your search queries

About SearchZooka

  • As you can see in the image above, I searched for Devils Workshop. It gave me relevant search details with Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, Digg, Technorati and Del.icio.us. There is no need to register or sign up to save the search. It gets automatically saved with the help of cookies.
  • In case you clear the cookies or change your computer you can recover the advances search but using a recovery key.
  • I could also search by relevance or by date.
  • The search criteria can really be tweaked a lot. I can specify particular date line to search within. I could also specify the search within a particular top level domain like .net, .org and .com.
  • There is also an option to search for files with the search engines. If a particular engine does not support the particular feature it gives results which are default.
  • I could also keep my search query be looked up anywhere on the net or even in specific page titles and URLs.

I think this website is a great tool to carry out research of a subject using various search engines. Often when we search we do not find something we want and we end up using another search engine. The need for this is removed with searchzooka doing this in one go and hence saving a lot of time. :-)

Try it out and let me know what you think about SearchZooka through your comments.
