How do I Choose the Correct Laptop Adapter?

Posted: 17 Dec 2009 01:11 AM PST

Some of us are desperate when we are faced with emergency conditions. For example, our laptop adapter is broken unexpectedly or our laptop batteries die when we are very dependent on our laptops. But we all know that it is not easy to find/buy an adapter or laptop batteries because of there are so many brands such as Hewlett-Packard, IBM/Lenovo, Acer, Apple, Dell, etc and they have so many types of products. Just for example a brand like HP has many types of Laptop AC Power Adapter like 120765-001, 316688-001, F4813A, AC-370, and many more. What about the other brands? They have many products too, even just for a Laptop AC Adapter. You can imagine that we could not so easy to find our laptop AC adapter. In fact, many stores that sell laptops but they don't sell the spare parts as well. Usually they will tell you that we have to order it first because it is difficult to find this stuff or the manufacturer doesn't make this product again and so on and so on.

Have you ever experienced anything like that? I'm sure you all have or would have had it, although not limited to laptops, but may also issue about PDAs, camcorders and others. I myself have experienced and that situation is very confusing and makes me frustrated.

To prevent this from happening to us, we have to anticipate it with collecting as many references about our peripherals which we think that someday they'll make us confused and frustated if one of the part had been damaged. We need a kind of "one stop shopping" to find/buy the spare parts of our electronic devices and we can start to collecting right now, when we are still calm and not panic. So we can evaluate objectively a store level in terms of the willingness of goods, competitive price, and the best of delivery service.

Choosing the correct laptop adapter is not an easy task. It's all about voltage, output power, and proper connection. If all these things do not match the specifications of your computer, than a fresh laptop adapter won't work properly and may potentially causing damage.

The easiest way to analysis this is to turn over laptop and see if there is a voltage listed anywhere on the bottom area. A sticker of a number with a V attached to it, such as 19.5V. Then, look for the current output needed for the laptop adapter. This number will have an A of mA associated with it. For example, it may say something like 4.7A or 950mA. Both numbers ensure acceptable that the power going to your machine will be acceptable and keep it operating within normal parameters.

Another thing to consider is whether you want an AC laptop adapter or DC adapter. And the last thing is go with a replacement laptop adapter, if available, directly from the manufacturer.
