How to create groups in Skype? [Video]

Posted: 31 May 2010 08:43 AM PDT

Skype is our favorite tool to communicate at rtCamp and one of the main reason for that is because we often end up working from home and hence Skype is a easier way to be communicate and stay connected with the team. As an Editor I have to keep in touch with other Editors and Admins working on our blog network and one create way to collaborate is to create a group within Skype.

How to create a group on Skype?

  • When you sign into Skype and look up your contacts online. Click on Contacts and then Create New Group.
  • This will create a new group. Make sure to give it a relevant name and start dragging and dropping your contacts into this new group.
  • Also write in a message to your contacts to let them know that you have created a group on Skype which includes them.
  • Best way to keep in touch with such a group is to save them in your contacts list.

Below is a video demo of how it is done. ;-)

If you liked this you might also like reading up on how to use Skype for Home survelliance and also how to run two instances of Skype on one single computer.

Do you use Skype or any other software to communicate between teams? Do let us know your views through your comments.

Stickr: Sticky notes for the internet

Posted: 31 May 2010 05:19 AM PDT

We all are aware of sticky notes. They were usually the yellow small trails of paper we would stick on our desks and workplaces. Then it’s use increased with them being used on books as small notes and even to do lists being stuck on refrigerators. So it was no surprise that when we spend half our time on the computer sticky notes applications were quite a hit.

But what about the internet? Today I spend more time online visiting various websites and often bookmark certain pages which I like. With Stickr you can leave sticky notes all over the internet.

stickr notes internet Stickr: Sticky notes for the internet

About Stickr Notes

  • You can start using this service by signing in with your Facebook, Google, Twitter or Friendfeed account.
  • I could start leaving notes online with my Google account to various pages I visited. This is not like a bookmark but basically leaving a small note. You can choose for the note to be saved as private or public.
  • Public notes are visible to anyone visiting the page and being signed in with Stickr. I personally like using private notes so that I can follow up or some article I have read online or even have my personal to-do list whenever I visit a particular website. ;-)
  • Stickr allows your to download extensions and add-ons depending on the browser you use.

This is very similar to Google’s Sidewiki which allows someone to leave a comment to any webpage. But I prefer Stickr for is private feature of using sticky notes. Do try it out and let me know your views through your comments.

Top 1000 sites listed by Google Adplanner

Posted: 30 May 2010 06:08 AM PDT

We all know about Alexa Rankings for websites and it is common knowledge amongst website owners that even if we did not take Alexa as a true representation for traffic on a website it is something that internet advertisers often take seriously. This is where Google has started to take action by making it easy for advertisers to recognize which website suits their advertising needs.

google adplanner Top 1000 sites listed by Google Adplanner

So Google has now its own list of Top 1000 sites ranked according to unique visitors. Interestingly they have excluded their own websites like Google.com and Youtube from the rankings.

About Google’s List of top 1000 sites

  • The #1 ranked website is Facebook and Yahoo is ranked #2. This is quite interesting in the absence of any website by Google not showing up in the rankings.
  • For every site you can see unique visitors, Page views, site category and if the website has any ads.
  • You can also look up any website’s data from Google from it’s Ad Planner website. If you own the the website you are looking up can also opt in and let the website use your websites traffic data from Google Analytics.

So what do you think about Google’s decision not to include its own websites from being ranked? I guess it opens up two questions which are Is Google trying to hide its number from being compared or is this a way for Google to avoid others trying to say it is not fair when it comes to ranking its own websites?

What do you think about it? Do drop in your comments with your views.

Selective Syncing now on Dropbox [Experimental]

Posted: 30 May 2010 01:39 AM PDT

Dropbox is set to bring Selective Syncing to its users in the upcoming stable build. Currently this feature is enabled in the latest experimental build only. Most of us are know about this excellent tool to sync files and folders across different computers. To know more about Dropbox, I suggest you to read:

What is Selective Sync?

Earliers builds of dropbox sync all your data uploaded to dropbox folder on one computer to the other computer. Selective sync lets you choose the folders you want to synchronize to your computer. In a way, it provides the users with greater control over what is sync’d from one computer to other. This feature can be useful when you have limited space available on your system where sync’ing is to be done! More about Selective Sync.

How to use Selective Sync?

Currently this feature is only available with the latest experimental build of dropbox. To use the feature, you need to download and install it on your computer where sync’ing is to be done. Download the experimental build for Windows/Mac/Linux.

After the installation, let dropbox index your files/folders and donot pause in between. Now, follow the steps:

  • Right click on dropbox notification icon, and select preferences.
  • Click on advanced tab and click Selective Sync button.

The list of folders in your dropbox folder will appear in a pop-up window. Uncheck the folder that you do not want to sync on your computer. When done, click ok! Unchecked folders will be removed from your hard-drive.

This way, you can simply sync selected folders with your computer. The experimental build has worked fine for me, on Windows xp as well as Linux 10.04. Download and give it a try! Or you can use stable builds of dropbox and wait for Selective Sync to come to the stable build.

Happy Sync’ing!
