Google adds local search feature

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 07:22 AM PST

Twitter went local or rather it has tried to show local trends which I felt was a great way to get the dirt on what is happening locally. Well we could not expect Google to sit idly and look at other website steal the thunder when it comes to local search. So now we have a search option with Google called Nearby.

Google “Nearby” Results

  • When you carry out a search on Google clicking on ‘Show Options‘ lets you choose and filter the search results.
  • Here you will see the opting to click on ‘Nearby‘ and it gives you localized results.
  • This is quite useful as it does not really rely on social networks to give local results.
  • This feature is not available as yet with Google.co.in and I think its only available for North America.
  • In the image above I looked up the word university. Clicking on nearby got me results taking my location as New York which is what I put in.

Overall I think this is meant for people searching for information locally like looking up places of interest. So what do you think about so much emphasis websites are laying on going local. Do you think it is viable or actually useful? Do you think other than maps and road directions you would actually want to search for local results? Do drop in your comments.

Windows 98 still going!

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 10:44 PM PST

I saw a rare PC the other day… It was running Windows 98.

The customer was using dial-up internet, and was using the PC mainly to write a book, and to send/receive emails.

Now, I was called out because she could not get  the specific emails she was expecting or any others.

As I suspected, the emails were timing out because there was an inbound message with a large attachment.

Given the limited knowledge of this customer, explaining how to use a web browser, and then logging into her webmail account in order to delete the large emails, was just not possible.

I could see that even explaining the relevance and relationship between Kb and Mb was going to be near impossible.

So now the customer could get another friend  inadvertently send her large attachments, and the process will repeat itself.

The solution is to get broadband… but to get Broadband, you need a new PC that can make the most of broadband speeds.

So now the customer is in a strange situation, where, if she wants to receive large attachments, she needs to upgrade her internet connection, and buy a new PC.

From Devil’s to Devils’ Workshop… (with new theme!)

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 07:36 AM PST

(Disclaimer: Images in this post are not screenshots of DW’s new theme!)

From a Devil’s Workshop to many Devils’ Workshop (community blog), DW’s every aspect has been changed in last 2 years except it’s theme!

Now after 18 months, we are here with a fresh new theme to accommodate our growing community’s needs. After tremendous feedback from you guys, we faced a hard-time finalizing list of features that final theme will have.

Below are the some suggestions from you that were of tremendous help to us. Its not possible to list more than 100 comments/mails/suggestions here. Rest assured we read each of them and followed below with some of our own keeping in mind every aspect of DW.

  • Changing “Devils Workshop" to "Devils' Workshop" was the most valuable suggestion by Saeed and well explained later by Varun Agarwal.
  • Gautam asked to include social media/share icons, comment threading and some graphics.
  • Ajax, jquery inclusion and copyright updates was proposed by AKM .
  • Arjun S Kumar suggested to include threaded comments, magazine style layout, graphical effect .
  • New logo design was sent by Sridhar Iyer and we grateful for it. He also supported to get the magazine style layout and gradient blue-white color that we have used in this new theme.
  • SmashinGeeks asked to change the logo and the footer design.
  • S.Pradeep Kumar supported our decision to keep the old color scheme for the new theme.
  • There were a number of suggestion made by Rakesh Waghela @Webiyo.com . Some of them were to include categories in the header, improvisation of the comment input box and comments section, include striking content in footer, include more related content in the sidebar and to lay more stress on community building.

About new theme…

New themes color scheme may not be new to you but we were not running after colors. The goal was to design a theme which will take community spirit of Devils’ Workshop to the new level. Some new enhancements added are…

  • There were more than 100 categories which are reduced to 10-15 now. That too with category icons and nicely designed category pages.
  • Home-page now has a slider which displays 10 recently featured posts.
  • Commenting now has inline-replies enabled. Also comments are threaded now.
  • Comment form now has those HTML formatting buttons.
  • Single posts now have prominent social-sharing buttons.
  • Author info box on single posts now supports Twitter handle. Just add your twitter-name to your DW profile.
  • Related posts now shown with thumbnails on single-post pages.
  • Sidebar now have recent-posts, popular-posts and entire blog-network’s recent posts in tabbed manner.
  • Performance-wise all small images and icons that are part of theme are now displayed using CSS-Sprite.
  • Contact-form added in footer, so that you can contact us from every-page on DW!

Credits…

Its our readers who decided for most part what should go online. Rest, almost every rtCamper here contributed codes, plugins and feedback during month-long development of this theme.

Vivek Jain and Saorabh Kumar took lots of efforts in finding and fixing bugs in various browsers. Still, if you find any bugs or issues, please let us know.

Five Gmail Labs Features Fail to make it

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 03:07 AM PST

Some of the Gmail Lab’s less useful features made it to gmail while the useful ones failed a test that never happened! Though, Google had to say that the choice to upgrade and retire features was made on user feedback and usage, but it doesn’t look like the same. Here are the Gmail lab features that you won’t see anymore-

Muzzle

This feature made it possible for gmail users to conserve screen in sidebar chat in Gmail. In simple words, it was meant to “cut the crap” from chat menu, by hiding your contact’s chat status messages. Now you can again see a cluttered version of gmail chat menu!

To protest against this, people have started signing a petition to get back muzzle, and a twitter account has also been made for the same- @GmailMuzzle

Email Addict

This feature encouraged users to take a break from email. “Closes Gmail for 14 minutes”, providing much needed break to Gmail addicts. May be Google didn’t want you to to loose any time looking up their ads!! And for this, they retired such a nice app.

Location in Signature & Random Signature

Both these features automated the signature processing in your mails. More info on these features can be seen here.

Fixed width font

It is often annoying to see random font changes in your mails. This feature kept your messages on a fixed width for paragraph breaks, double spacing and more.

Do you miss any of these features? No need to worry! You will get similar value from the Grease-monkey scripts too. Like, if you enjoyed the Muzzle feature, you can use the script – Gmail Muzzle Lab Reviving.
