The Floppy Disk Drive is officially dead

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 08:23 AM PDT

A few days ago I wrote about how data storage has changed dramatically in the past 20 odd years. One thing I did think about then was what happens to floppy disks. I have a few stacked away but now my only computer is a laptop and hence no option to use them. I read on Yahoo, that Sony has decided to stop the production of 3.5 inch floppy disk and it has heralded the official demise of the Floppy Disk drive.

end of floppy drvie The Floppy Disk Drive is officially dead

Why did Floppy Drives die?

Like all technology floppy disks got defunct. As a matter of fact it has been widely of use only as Bootable Disk in the last ten years rather than be alternatives for storage of data. Finally with the arrival of cloud computing and DVDs becoming the norm Floppies had no value as you could store more data on one single email instead of a whole floppy drive.

Where will you see floppy disk?

There are still large corporations using old systems which were created in the 1980s and they will be probably the only ones using floppy disks to boot their systems or save data. But with newer systems where someone carries a 4GB USB storage drive I cannot see any revival for the poor old floppy disk.

I think not many will miss the floppy disk drive much. I can see that the only time we’ve mentioned the use of the floppy drive has been to about how to run a Messenger from a removable storage. I will some how always associate floppies with childhood memories of playing a round of Dave on a whirring behemoth of a computer. So what are your memories of the floppy drive ? Do let me know through your comments.

Remotely Accessing Linux via Windows

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 05:26 AM PDT

There are situations when you want to access a system remotely. If both the systems have Windows OS then it’s not a problem but what if one system has Windows & the other has LINUX/Mac. :-P

The solution is to use VNC server.

VNC server logo Remotely Accessing Linux via Windows

Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a graphical desktop sharing system that uses the RFB protocol to remotely control another computer. VNC is platform-independent.

Linux

Almost all Linux OS have inbuilt VNC server. For connecting Linux system to Windows you need to install VNC viewer which you can download from www.realvnc.com or www.tightvnc.com

Windows

  • You need to install VNC server from above mentioned sites on your system.
  • Steps to connect Windows viewer to Linux server
  • Start VNC server on linux system using command VNC Server
  • Click on Start and Run VNC viewer on Windows system.

VNC server
  • Type the IP Address of the system to which you want to connect and then click OK.
  • Now you can access the remote (Linux) system.

The only problem which I came across  is that when you completely maximize the screen it locks  & you have to manually close session from remote system to gain the access again.

If you liked this post you might also find how to troubleshoot a friends desktop remotely and how to control a Linux PC with a blue-tooth Mobile as remote very useful. Do let us know your views with your comments to let us know if you found this post useful.

Follow cost: Find out the cost of following someone on Twitter

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 01:00 AM PDT

We all love Twitter and like to follow interesting profiles. But what exactly are these interesting profiles? For me it is someone who shares interesting information. But at times you see that some people also end up sending 40-50 tweets in a single day and this can be undesirable, especially if the tweets are repetitive.

With Follow Cost you can know the cost of following someone on Twitter.

About Follow Cost

  • Follow Cost calculates and displays the number of Tweets per day on an average and also displays the number of Tweets per day for the last 100 Tweets.
  • This is a good way to understand if someone is tweeting too much and hence might affect your Twitter time-line.
  • There is also another purpose and that is to check if the account is updated regularly. There is no use following someone who is inactive on Twitter.

Some sites can be quite useful and have niche importance compared to others which have online apps for Twitter. If you liked Follow Cost you might also like to check the first person you followed on Twitter and also how to create RSS feeds of your Twitter timeline.
