Google Reader trying to take on Stumble Upon?

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 05:46 AM PST

If you have recently in the past few hours logged in to your Google Reader you might have noticed a link to Google Reader Play. This is a concept where you can look up random and interesting articles on Google Reader with a very different and interesting layout. The layout of reader does not change and Reader Play is a totally different landing page. One playing around a bit with it, there is one website which surely must have started feeling a bit jittery.

That website would be Stumble Upon. Take a look at the image below and do not be mistaken. It is the layout for configuring the web pages you come across with Google Reader Play.

Google Reader Plus

  • Visit http://google.com/reader/play for using Google Reader Plus.
  • Unlike Reader you do not necessarily have to sign-in to view random and interesting web pages.
  • The format is unique as in your do not see the entire page but just images and a bit of text and link to the page.
  • This means images have become the key for getting a good viewing experience with Google Reader Plus.

Why Stumble Upon might feel the heat?

Websites like Stumble Upon or Digg deal with a community which promotes and drives traffic to websites. The fear is with Google being the number one search engine, what stops it from giving more and more relevance to a reader recommending an article on Google Reader rather than any other social media?

This sort of randomized looking at articles is very popular and I must say Google Reader Play does have a interesting and eye catching layout. I wonder now if they will take on websites like Stumble Upon and further end up dominating all facets of the internet or is this just a quirky service Google sometimes comes up with but hardly follows up on.

Try out Google Reader Play and write in your comments. I will surely be wanting to read your opinions.

How To Set DNS Records with IndiaTimes Server

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 12:25 AM PST

domain_registrar After my last post on my experience with Indiatimes domain service, I got a couple of questions asking how to change the dns settings for domains registered with Indiatimes.

As I already mentioned in that article, Indiatimes does not provide total dns control to its customers. There are, however, two ways you can get your dns settings done.

1) Providing details to Indiatimes tech-support team

You can mail the Indiatimes web-support team at "websupport[at]indiatimes.co.in" with the required cname, aname and mx records. For me it took 5 days, 4 e-mails and 5 phone calls before the changes were finally made, but ideally you will get it done within 2 working days.

2) Manage your dns through another domain vendor who provides total dns control

This is my preferred way, because you get full control of your dns settings. There are many registrars who provide this service for free. I will tell you how to do it with GoDaddy Offsite DNS.

i. Login to your GoDaddy account and go to https://dcc.godaddy.com/default.aspx?activeview=offsitedns&sa=

ii. Click Add Off-Site DNS.

Off-site DNS

iii. Enter your domain name in the domain name field and click OK.

iv. Wait for a couple of minutes (refresh the screen if required).

domain_status

That's the first part. To complete the process you will have to update the domains NameServer's.

v. Login to your Indiatimes domain manager.

vi. Click on Name Servers.

vii. Update the nameservers with
mns01.domaincontrol.com
mns02.domaincontrol.com and save settings.

change nameserver

That's it. Within 24-48 hours your nameservers will be modified and then you can enjoy full dns control through GoDaddy. Thanks Bisomber for the tip.
