Posted: 10 Feb 2010 05:52 PM PST

Youtube has one of the largest video collection and many of the videos have graphic violence, war footage or footage which you don't wany your family or kids to see.  To ensure your family safety, Youtube introduced a new feature call safety mode.

This new safety mode from youtube will make sure that videos which contains any such graphics which you don't want your kids and family to see, will not be shown.

While announcing this new feature youtube also mentioned that

"While no filter is 100% perfect, Safety Mode is another step in our ongoing desire to give you greater control over the content you see on the site."

You can watch this video to understand how you can enable or disable  Safety mode in Youtube :

What do you feel about this new feature? Is it useful or it will come out to be just another feature from youtube?

4 Google Chrome Extensions To Take Webpage Screenshots

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 04:29 PM PST

Taking screenshot of a web page has become very easy, thanks to the  available snapshot utilities, some of them we mentioned in one of our  posts 5 free screen capture/recorder softwares for bloggers. To make it even easier, we discovered a few extensions for google chrome.

These extensions help you to capture a screen, from your browser itself! sounds good? Wait! this isnt the limit. Some of these Extensions come with the ability to edit the captured image, eliminating the need of external utilities to capture screenshots of web pages.

1. Aviary Screen Capture- PNG image

Aviary screen capture is full of options. It provides you with all the features, that any desktop image capturing and editing utility can have. You can edit the captured image and save it on your system, or upload it on web. The editor has many options that not only include resize, rotate, flip and add visuall graphics but, also allow you to add effects to the captured image. This extension is my personal favourite extension!

Download and install this extension from here- Aviary Screen Capture.

2. Screenshot- JPG image

A simple Screen capturing extension that opens the captured image in a new tab and by right clicking the image, you can save it to the desired location. Since you are capturing the web page, so it will not capture menu bar or url menu in the screenshot.

All the extensions mentioned above provide a screenshot of the visible portion of the loaded website. Here is an extension that allows you to take screenshot of complete webpage, with auto-scrolling. When capturing a webpage, you are provided three options-

  • Take a visible screenshot or, all page screenshot.
  • Resize window before capturing(width and height input allowed).
  • Change header and footer.

This extension also works offline.

Free software to capture rounded corners and Aero semi-transparent Windows

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 08:39 AM PST

Snag It has been a favorite among bloggers for taking screen shots. One problem with Snag-It is when you take screen-shots of a  Window which is semi-trasnparent with rounded corners thanks to Aero; the results are not as good as you might want them to be. I came across 7Capture a screen capture software which deals with semi-transparent windows with rounded corners in a much more appreciable way.

Here is an image below of the same window screen-shot taken with Snag-It and 7Capture.

About 7 Capture

  • You can download 7Capture from here.
  • It works fine with Windows 7, Vista and XP. It is meant only for Windows platform. It us mainly useful for rounded corners and neutralizing transparency in a Window. So I don’t think it is much use of people without Aero features.
  • I compared 7Captrue with Snag It for the corners; 7Capture is not a great image editing tool which Snag-It surely is. Snag-It is a paid software which 7Capture is not; so comparison is unfair.
  • The one thing I did not like with 7Capture is it has absolutely no editing features. Which means after you save the file on your computer; you end up using the image with another editor.

Try it out of you want to takes screen-shots which are almost as good as they can be seen on your desktop; let me know what you think about 7Capture.

Saving Face – Literally !!

KeyLemon

" Please do not store passwords if you are accessing this web page from a public computer " . Grr ! How many times  have we gone through the misery of repeating our login id’s time & again. Whether that be your 5 minute break when you have to  lock your PC or having multiple email / networking ids, lets face it , we absolutely HATE the process of authentication !  Any solutions ? Biometrics ! Biometrics is a science of methods used to uniquely identify humans based on the features each one of us is made of ! Cool huh !

KeyLemon , has created a facial recognition software  which will authenticate your session by scanning your face instead of you manually typing in the password ! Besides Keylemon , HP have also made their presence felt  in the Biometrics sector . Their face recognition software was recently in news for being unable to track features of dark people . HP refuted the allegations and claimed that it was a contrast issue .

However , the software that we are talking about today has proven to be extremely efficient in identifying faces irrespective of shades . To have a glimpse of how this software tracks your information and regulates access , check this video tutorial by clicking here.

1

KeyLemon allows you to set multiple accounts and it uses your web cam to check if the person using the computer is really you ! You can limit the number of times it scans your face from settings . In a era where security is of prime importance , we think this software is an ideal solution . You can use Keylemon to authenticate not just your windows login but Firefox users can download a plug in to access Facebook , LinkedIn and Twitter .

Currently you can download this software and use it for 30 logins with face recognition as it is free to try , although the retail price of the full version is $19.95 .

The Minimum hardware requirements  are :

  • Pentium 500 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 1GHz or greater)
  • 100 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
  • 25 MB hard drive space
  • USB webcam or integrated webcam (laptop)

To download the software kindly click here .  Try this app and drop comments to let us know what you think about it !

Google buzzes Facebook and Twitter

Posted: 09 Feb 2010 11:58 PM PST

Some of you might have woken up today morning and checked out something called Google Buzz. Some of you lucky ones might even have it available in your Gmail account. Google launched it’s own social network Buzz which will  be embedded within Gmail. There will be a link to Buzz as you sign-in to Gmail page. It is still being rolled out and I guess everyone with a Gmail id will soon have access to it. Google Buzz has an advantage which no social networking website has had untill now and that is a ready user base of millions.

Google Buzz at a glance

  • Like all social networking websites it will allow sharing of links, photos and your comments on what you are upto. This is all integrated in your Inbox and also allows you to use your Inbox to comment on shared links, pictures and status messages.
  • All your Gmail contacts will automatically appear as your friends on Buzz. It will also integrate with Picassa, Google Reader, Flickr and Twitter.
  • One point that Google Buzz is making is that it will have a simplistic style of sharing things personally and publicy without too much of a fuss. I guess that was pointed to Facebook and Twitter. Twitter users obviously will not share pictures of their wedding as it is all public and Facebook users might find it difficult with the privacy settings to share a link with the world. Buzz probably will simplify it but I have not got the change to play around with Buzz and so I will reserve my verdict on it.
  • The potential for Google Buzz to be really big is there. It can shamelessly borrow from Facebook and Twitter and improve on it rather than try to reinvent the wheel. It has a featured called recommended messages. This might be something similar to a ReTweet; but considering Google’s search engine genius; it might be a way for a way of ranking users and their content.

Here is a video of Google Buzz from its blog.

I do not know how successful Google Buzz will end up being. But it seems to have a better chance than Yahoo meme had when it was launched a few months ago. Let me know if you have Buzz enabled on your Gmail account what do you think about it?
