Jumo: Facebook co-founder’s new social network

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 07:00 AM PST

The spotlight has always been on Mark Zuckerberg when it comes to Facebook. Little is known about the co-founder and Zuckerberg’s then roomate -Chris Hughes. This time with the recently launched Jumo Beta – its his claim to fame.

Jumo is a social networking site which promotes various social causes. Rings a bell? Yes, Jumo is being popularly referred to as the social networking version of the popular Facebook Application, Causes. Jumo seeks to bring the users closer to the social issue they are passionate about.

How does Jumo work?

  • Since it is a social networking site, you need to create an account. You can only sign up for Jumo if you already have a Facebook account.

  • While you’re signing up, you can choose which category of issues you are interested in – like Education, Health, Poverty, etc.

  • Next, depending on the categories you select – you will get several organisations which you may follow with a single click.

Jumo: Pros and Cons :

  • The majority of Facebook users are in the 13-24 years age group. The target audience is far too young to donate sufficient funds for social causes.
  • The number of social networking sites will saturate users.
  • Jumo’s financial plan seems highly unstable. It started with about $750,000 as a grant from Omidyar Network. Mostly it would make its share as a cut from the donations made to the institutions it hosts. Whether or not this financial structure would change in the long run, we’ll have to see.
  • What works for Jumo is the intention of this network. The intention of involving the youth with issues using the medium of social networking might spur a strong positive emotion.
  • It also helps to build a ‘community’ of like-minded individuals. One can ‘talk’ by writing an influential piece on an issue of interest. Protests, donations, volunteering – all have a higher probability of involvement with the youth using Jumo.

Overall, it is surely refreshing to see a social network which is truly ‘social’ in nature. May be with Jumo we can all turn a new leaf in our virtual lives. Have you registered with Jumo? Share your views with me through your comments.

Gradient Generator – Online Tool to Generate CSS Gradient Property

    Posted: 02 Dec 2010 04:30 AM PST

I love to use CSS3 properties which is capable of doing enormous things. Lets take an example say border-radius that helped me reducing unwanted structural markup of my HTML file.

On the other hand lets talk about CSS3 Gradient property. I use to skip some CSS3 property like CSS Gradient because it becomes tedious to write its color codes, instead I like to implement the images. Now it is quite easier to implement CSS Gradient using Ultimate CSS Gradient Generator. It's a free online tool for web developers that produces CSS3 gradient property in no time. I just have to copy paste it to my stylesheet.

Below is the screen shot of Ultimate CSS Gradient Generator.

Enable Smart Mute to keep Gmail Inbox clean

    Posted: 02 Dec 2010 03:25 AM PST

Gmail logo thumb Enable Smart Mute to keep Gmail Inbox cleanGmail has this knack of being really useful. The choices are so many with filters and lab features that it difficult to know which one you want. Threaded conversation make it really neat for users to actually look up new and old emails in a single thread.

Emails in a thread can often be a little overwhelming. This is because many times we send an email to a group of colleagues or friends. Then everyone replies using "Reply All" and that can mean you have the conversation nicely presented but if you are not interested in the to and fro discussion it can be quite irritating.

Smart Mute is a labs feature with Gmail which allows us to mute a conversation but allows us a little more control on muted emails.

    Using Smart Mute with Gmail

    • While you are signed into Gmail, just look-up Settings. Then under Labs, look up the Smart Mute feature. Select "Enable" and click on “Save Changes” at the bottom part of the page.
    • Smart Mute avoid any muted conversation from appearing in your Inbox. It shows up in your Inbox only if your email id is inserted in the "TO" or "CC" fields.
    • If the email address is already in the "TO" or "CC" fields and you have muted the conversation, then the email shows up in your Inbox only if it the email in the thread is specifically addressed only to you. icon wink Enable Smart Mute to keep Gmail Inbox clean

If you are unaware which email thread you have muted in Gmail, just go to the search field at the top and enter "is:muted" and hit search.

This will display all the "Muted" email messages which are not in your Inbox. Just select the conversation you want and Unmute them in a bunch.

Do drop in your comments and views.
