Download Dropbox 1.0 RC: Use New “Selective Sync” feature

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 01:05 PM PST

Dropbox 1 0 RC logo Download Dropbox 1.0 RC: Use New Selective Sync featureI have used Dropbox for over a year. It is something everyone at work uses to store, backup and most important share synced files. At the moment Dropbox 0.8 version was still a beta version.

Dropbox 1.0 RC (Release Candidate) version is now out there for use.

If you were using Dropbox 0.8 beta then the features wont be very new for you but there are a few bugs fixed.

New features with Dropbox 1.0 RC

  • If you were using Dropbox 0.8 beta version then the changes are not too many. In terms of features and additions it is pretty much the same. Except there are many minor bug fixes.
  • The new feature out here is the Selective Sync. This allows selecting only certain folders from being Synced. Just look up “Selective Sync” in your Dropbox preferences.

  • Another great way to share folders is through creating a link and sharing it with others. This can be done from the Dropbox folder itself.

Some Disappointment!

The big disappointment with Dropbox 1.0 RC is that it does not have the “Watch Any Folder” option. This option is mainly a way for Dropbox to sync even outside the “My/Dropbox” folder.

Most final versions are pretty much similar to Release Cadidate versions and that means we will probably not have this function with Dropbox 1.0 in the future either.

When the final version of Dropbox is released is should automatically update on your computers. If you want Dropbox 1.0 RC right now, download it from their forums.

“When Can I Use” – Online Tool to Check Crossbrowser Support for Web Standards

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 02:30 AM PST

There are many browsers in the market I get totally confused which browser supports which feature, be it HTML5 or CSS3 or something else. I Googled and I found "When can I use…"

When can I use… page shows tables of a variety of current and upcoming web technologies. For all major browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Chrome, Safari). we can customize the page that shows only certain browser and features. It is  also included at the bottom of the page, which shows the percentage of the displayed features are supported.

Below there are few screenshot taken from the official web site.

Few feature may not support 100%, so what may be supported today may not actually work in the future. However it is likely that in most cases the browser will update its support as the aspect changes.

The feature list includes anything is of significant use to web designers, but still lacks support in at least one browser version. Indexes and Tables are available to compare different browser along with categories and Status, you can select browser of your choice to compare. As you select the check boxes the comparison appears on the below table.

[Tutorial] How to create Glass Effect in Photoshop?

Posted: 06 Dec 2010 08:58 PM PST

In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to apply blending styles on simple text, for converting it into a glass effect using Photoshop.

image 1 thumb [Tutorial] How to create Glass Effect in Photoshop?

  • Create a new file of size 500 x 400 pixels, and select a background image similar to the image shown below, as it is more effective than solid or any other types of images.
  • Now create a text layer, and write your text (Press shortcut key T to create a new text layer).
  • You can select font size and font family of your choice, I have used Rockwell as a font family and set it to font-size 120px.

  • As you can see in the image below, there is an option for blending in the layer palette. Select it to apply styles to your text.

  • After applying the above blending styles, it should look something like this. Now you are just a step away.

  • On reducing the fill value to '0' from your layer palate you are done with the glass effect!

  • As we have only applied blending styles to the text, we can change the text as desired.
