Skype is Sold

Posted: 25 Nov 2009 08:08 AM PST

Finally, the days of deals for out ever loved VOIP communication skypesoftware, Skype have ended and it has been sold. Skype, which was originally acquired by the online auction giant, eBay has been sold and the deal is completed. The confirmation is given on the Official Skype Blog

The investor group is led by Silver lakes. The deal valued Skype at a massive exchange of $2.75 B, with eBay still retaining approximately 33% of it.

eBay purchased on the first hand in September 2005, for $3.1 billion and worked hard to integrate it into the mainstream business model.

Would it make any difference to me?

Of course, yes. Since skype is now owned by a new company, expect a more feature packed and reloaded skype.

The impacts

With Skype being the most popular VOIP client in the world, maybe more companies will jump into the market. The competition will elevate the quality of service. If that doesn’t happens, Skype will be much better than what it presently is. Anyway, I believe it is a win-win situation for the customers!

We wish Skype all the best for the future and hope it becomes much better and let’s us continue to cut our phone bills and staying close to our friends, at the same time :)

Send attachments with Gmail while offline

Posted: 25 Nov 2009 04:04 AM PST

I am pretty sure that many of you might have heard of Gmail being available in offline mode. This mode which is still in Labs, allows me to use my Gmail account while I am offline. It supports conversation threading, search function along with composing and looking up Emails.

Offline Gmail

  • When Gmail is in offline mode it uses Google gears to store data on your computer for you to access all your mails. It becomes more or less like a desktop application rolled into a web application.
  • This is quite helpful if the internet connection is unstable or keeps dropping. Gmail in offline mode gets notified when the connection is back on and downloads all the new mails to your computer along with sending the ones your have composed.
  • This if truly great when you are travelling and might have trouble with connectivity issues.

The trouble with Gmail in offline mode was that it did not allow me to send attachments. That has all changed since Google announced that attachments will be available for people using Gmail in offline mode.

If you do not know how to got in offline mode with Gmail, use the following steps.

  • Click on Settings and then select Labs.
  • Select Enable next to Offline Gmail. Click Save Changes.
  • After refreshing or when Gmail reloads you will see a new “Offline” link in the upper righthand corner next to your username on Gmail page.
  • Click on Offline link to start the offline set up process.

Having a feature to allow attachments actually makes the experience of being offline with Gmail a lot more smoother than before and I won’t be surprised if this feature in Gmail graduates out of Labs soon and also becomes a regular part of Chrome OS. ;-)

Attach Documents to Google Calendar events

Posted: 25 Nov 2009 12:45 AM PST

I use Google Calendar to create events and reminders especially for important events or even meetings. One thing it does allow me to do is schedule meetings or events and create reminders for me either through email or pop-up. It also allows me to Create an event in my calendar and invite guests to the event. The guests are notified through their email. If they have a Gmail account they can sync their Google calendar with the event I created.

I am not sure if you are aware of Attach Google Documents feature on Calendar which is still in Labs. This allowed me to attach a document to the event I was creating (see image below).

The best thing about this is when I create an event with a Google document attached and add guests they can also view the documents. ;-)

This is ideal when you are creating events about a project and want to send over documents. Just attach them to along with the event.

To enable the Labs features, just click on Settings when on Google Calendar. Within Settings select Labs. In the list enable Attach Google Docs feature as shown in image below.

This will enable you to attach documents with any new event you create while using Google Calendar. :-)

Twitter is comparatively very simple and easy to use, even for one who is struggling to learn the basics of web. While Facebook and MySpace require tricky elements in their user profiles, components & maintenance of a personal web page. On the other hand Twitter requires a short and simple registration process to create your public profile, and then a user is ready to start tweeting. All that is need is the ability to type simple messages within 140 characters about your current activities or interests and post them as updates for your followers. The simplicity of twitter is what that is drawing web marketers into using twitter for marketing.

Ease of access

In twitter a user can “Tweet,” or write a short message, as often or as infrequently as they want. There are also many twitter applications available for Twitter that integrate with your twitter account to  manage your postings, allow you schedule tweets for future. These add-ons twitter applications can also manage your friend contacts, response to posts & updates from other twitterians whom you have chosen to follow. There are various online applications which can be used for using twitter for marketing.

Great potential

In twitter large market exists, and web marketers can easily identify targeting specific market segments for promoting their business and using twitter for marketing. Like any other website on the internet, Twitter is not spared from SPAM either. Many Twitter users are actually spammers, promoting large volume of adverts in their tweets, hoping to get some interest. But twitter is created in such a way that spammers can't have it. As soon as you post some irrelevant and annoying message you are no longer followed by a user and they start to leave you and your follower count decreases.
