Check if you can trust a website before you click on its link with WOT

Posted: 11 May 2010 09:10 AM PDT

As a blogger who writes about Tech, I end up visiting a lot of websites which might or might not be safe. How do I come across these website? Usually I come across them by doing some research, thanks to Google our friendly search engine.

To make sure I do not click on a link to a site which is not trustworthy I use Web Of Trusts (WOT) addon or extensions depending on the browser you use.

About Web of Trust

  • Web of Trust actually has scanned millions of websites and allows us simple warning about the sites trustworthiness thanks to an add-on of extension.
  • It shows the green Web of Trust symbol as show in the above image whenever Google lists out search results.
  • Individual sites also can be scanned as and when you visit them. The best way to really check out how WOT rates them before visiting the website is to search for that URL through Google. ;-)

Web of Trust is supported across Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome and works on Mac, Windows and Linux. For someone like me who is online and browsing literally many hours everyday Web of Trust along with Privacy Choice which is an Firefox Add-on to keep a tab on which websites track my usage statistics is a big boon.

Do look it up and let me know if you find it useful.

Follow everything Google does on Twitter

Posted: 11 May 2010 04:53 AM PDT

Twitter has changed how we gather information and news. If there is an earthquake somewhere, we try and get the latest on Twitter. Most internet companies put out what is new with their services on Twitter.

Google is no different and it often blogs about something new that is it doing on its various domains and internet services. So the best way to follow Google and the mischief it is up to will be by following all its Twitter profiles.

follow google twitter Follow everything Google does on Twitter

Google has a landing page which lists all their Twitter account. All these Twitter profile accounts are neatly organized under Company Wide, Products and services, Geo, Developers, Countries and Regions, Advertisers and Marketers and Online Publishers.

If you are looking to stay upto date about everything Google does, do look up their Google Press page for Twitter.

I have always wondered why Google does not just buy Twitter as now we know Google loves Twitter so much. Do drop in your comments with your views and opinions.

Publicly share your email address without being spammed

Posted: 10 May 2010 10:40 PM PDT

In the days of Twitter and Facebook taking over our lives one thing that we still use as much if not more than say 5 years ago is Email. A lot of people are using their email a lot more even though email was supposed to die in the past few years thanks to the rise of social networks.

This makes sharing your email address a little risky as it can often mean you will receive untold amounts of spam from various internet marketeers selling you all kinds of unwanted products. Scr.im allows creating our email address into short URLs so it can be shared without the spam bots picking it up.

email convert short url Publicly share your email address without being spammed

About Scr.im

  • Type in your email and create a short url automatically. I could also create customized short URLs for protecting my email id.
  • You can share this URL on Twitter, Facebook or even in a HTML document.
  • Once someone clicks on the short URL, he/she will be taken to the website where your email address can be revealed.

This is a pretty decent way to keep your email address safe. I have earlier used and written about self destructing emails but that is good only if you want to not let even the recipient your email id. With scr.im I can share my email address without worrying about some bot picking it up and spamming my Inbox to glory.

If you know any more tips or similar services do share by dropping in your comments.
