Google’s ten-point philosophy

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 07:00 PM PST

Do you think Google is just another corporate with billion dollar revenues and a too big company in the market? Have you ever thought if Google too can have philosophical values to follow and guide their future actions? If not, then you must read the following below, 10 statements from the Google's book of philosophy in my words.

DW googlephilosophy1 thumb Googles ten point philosophy

  1. Just concentrate on building user-oriented services and no need to worry about the rest.
  2. Focus highly on one thing for effective implementation.
  3. It’s good to be fast, don't make slow.
  4. Web means share & care with democracy to all.
  5. Just don't limit information to a PC.
  6. Don't lose ethics while making too much money.
  7. Display as much information as possible through the web.
  8. There should be no boundaries of culture, society or language while accessing information.
  9. It is not necessary to be formal to build a big company; be normal, not formal.
  10. Don't just stop if you find it is great, keep working till it is greater.

I believe these words mean a lot in today's corporate culture where companies feel their revenues would grow only if they are 'serious'. A small and short message to all such companies, find some fun, 'Google it' icon razz Googles ten point philosophy

Encode information about yourself in a Barcode!

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 08:08 AM PST

With the rise of retailing, came the rise of the now familiar bar-code. The black and white bars of differing widths, can encode a certain amount of information. This information in shops is usually prices and serial numbers for more efficiency. On tickets a barcode might be used to counter black marketeers.

Barcode yourself is a web tool with which we can create our personal barcode with information like age, gender, location.

Barcode yourself features

  • The website basically allows entering some vital personal information like your gender, age, country, height and weight.
  • Then this information is taken and a barcode is generated.
  • I had the options of downloading this bar-code as an image on my computer or evening getting a printout.

With Phones that can read bar-codes and even create them, such tools can be quite useful to encode details without being to obvious.

Try out Barcode Yourself and create your own unique barcode. It is created by Scott Blake, a bar-code enthusiast and artist. Do drop in your comments.

SocialGmail: Add personal touch to your Gmail!

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 01:00 AM PST

Everyday, I get about 100 emails from different people, friends and even blogs. Browsing through those emails I read their sender's name, the Subject and the boring date & time however what I miss is the personal touch which I get while talking to them over phone or meeting them up.

Today, suddenly my friend 'Rakshit' asked me to see SocialGmail, a Chrome extension. I thought must be something usual which I often get recommendations from my friends and colleagues. Though when I tried it out, I was amazed to see the way it works.

SocialGmail adds a row of Avatars (iconic pictures) to your email conversations just before the sender's name. This happens only if they are personally connected to you on Gmail and not for unknown people or anonymous emails.

I was just thinking that this should have been a Gmail Labs application instead of being a Chrome extension. What do you think? Let me know your suggestions and please do post your comments as that is the biggest encouragement I receive for writing. icon smile SocialGmail: Add personal touch to your Gmail!

Apple’s mobile app market share dips!

DW applesales1 thumb Apples mobile app market share dips!

Yet the deal between Nokia and Microsoft is not in force and what you see above is mere a transition which has happened without this new couple participating. Apple has successfully maintained it's dominance in the Mobile App sales in the last year i.e. 2010 and has even registered a growth of 131.9% over the sales in 2009. However the moment you start comparing this growth with the other Mobile app sellers (Blackberry, Nokia Ovi and Android), few eyebrows would raise.

Why did Apple’s growth slow down?

One of the major factors of the slow down is the rapid growth in Android phone sales. While Android app sales has grown by more than 850% in just one year, even Nokia has managed to grow by about 720%. Another reason is that Apple’s mobile apps being sold since long and hence there is now a concentration in the market, resulting in lower demand.

Can we conclude that Apple has starting losing it out, or will this prepare Apple better for the upcoming years? However the revenues have doubled over a year, hence Apple apps collectively do not looks like doing bad. Let me know what are your views and do post your comments!
