Google Transit – Get Pune Bus Routes on Google Maps

Posted: 03 Jan 2011 07:30 AM PST

I grew up in Mumbai, and when I moved to Pune, India for a job, the first thing that troubled me was that figuring out public transport in the city. I was like any newcomer, who finds it very difficult to navigate around the city without real first hand knowledge of the roads around.

I guess with Google Maps we are better equipped to atleast have some idea of places which are new. Recently Google announced that it has added all bus routes in Pune to Google Maps.

Google Transit Features

  • Many might be familiar about Google Maps showing how to get from Place A to Place B. With Google Transit the idea is to show this information assuming you will be taking public transport, like the metro or bus routes.
  • In India Google Transit has covered the Delhi Metro, Kolkata Metro, Bangalore Bus Routes (BMTC) and Chennai MRTS.
  • This makes it quite easy to look up public transport option for people visiting the cities or even for locals who might be unaware of certain routes.

I guess this is one more way we are soon going to become very dependent on Google. What are your thoughts? Do drop in your comments.

Feedly – Firefox add-on to view feeds

Posted: 03 Jan 2011 05:36 AM PST

Being a ‘blogger’ means your day involves 2 main tasks – writing like a maniac alternated with reading like a manic. Though ‘subscriptions’ as a system serve as a major time saver, it also makes it quite mundane with a regular layout. This Firefox add-on attempts to reinvent that experience for you – Feedly. Its the perfect add-on if you are someone like me – following several blogs, subscriptions, alerts and thirsty for a clean layout to view these.

Feedly is a Firefox add-on which displays all your subscriptions in a magazine-like layout. You need to activate this add-on with your Google account, following which it automatically loads in all your Reader settings on one page. With neat tabs, and predefined groups that you may have created on Google Reader.

How Feedly works:

  • Download the Feedly add-on from here. After the pop-up opens, click Install Now. Restart your Firefox Browser.

Feedly Install Feedly Firefox add on to view feeds

  • When the browser re-opens, the Feedly home page will open automatically. Notice the green icon now beside the address bar.

  • At the Feedly Page, login with your Google Account (if you have multiple accounts, then the one you use to receive feeds).

Feedly Login Feedly Firefox add on to view feeds

  • You can now view all your subscriptions in an organized manner, with tabs like – Cover, Digest, Latest or predefined groups that you may have created with Google Reader.

Worth Noting:

  • Feedly is limited to Google Reader users.
  • Attaches a mini Feedly which permits easy sharing on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, etc.

I think Feedly does a good job at helping the specific market it caters to. I happen to be in that category of Google Reader and Firefox users so it did make following multiple blogs easier for me. What do you think about it? Do let me know what you think about it. Drop your comments below.

Alarm glitch gives iPhone users a extended hangover in the New Year

Posted: 02 Jan 2011 10:35 PM PST

I am sure many of us must have partied on New Year's eve and ended up with hangovers. Most times after such instances we set alarms on our mobile phones to wake us up for that important meeting or flight. Most iPhone users who did that, were in for a rude shock. The alarm never went off.

A software glitch made sure that alarms set on iPhones did not ring or left many people quite irritated as they over-slept. Some missed meetings and also flights. This is when the buzz on Twitter really caught fire.

The alarms function that did not go off were only the ones set on 1st and 2nd of January 2011. The issue will be resolved probably with a patch upgrade. Ideally alarm glitch will not continue from 3rd January onwards.

Which phones were affected?

Mostly the phones that were affected were iPhone 4  models and older phones with newer upgraded software. This is the second time iPhone 4 users have had to deal with glitches as at first they had call drop issues thanks to antennae problems.

Do you think the aura around Apple is fading in the past year? Do drop in your comments.
