Protect Your Home While You are Away

Going on vacation can be a time for your family to make new memories, share new experiences and enjoy different destinations. It can also be a time for thieves to strike your home. While most people don’t want to entertain that possibility, the reality is that thieves never take a vacation. Protecting your home while you are away will give you security and peace of mind.

Like a Good Neighbor…

If you are going to be leaving for several days, tell a neighbor you trust and leave a key to your home, if possible. Your neighbor can keep an eye on your home and report any suspicious activity. They can also collect any mail and newspapers from in front of your house. A stack of newspapers piled up is like a neon sign announcing to burglars that you’re not home.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Install motion activated floodlights around your home and eliminate any dark or shady areas near entrances. Cut down tall hedges that can provide cover for a criminal looking to break into your house. Mount a camera near your front and back entrances to signal to would-be thieves that someone is watching. Sign up for discount alarm monitoring that will alert the police if someone disengages your home alarm system. Make your home appear busy during the day and night. Use a timer that will switch your lights on and off automatically. Make it the center of action by having someone park in your driveway periodically, sit on your porch or cut your grass.

Don’t Announce You are Leaving

Don’t update your Facebook status to “away in Paris for a week,” or tweet your photos while you are sitting on the beach. Word can get around pretty quickly and criminals may find out that you are not home. One family announced online that they were going to a relative’s wedding, and when they returned that evening, thieves had broken into their home. Keep your travel plans a secret and wait until you return to give updates.

When you are leaving for a vacation, protect your home and property by enlisting the help of trusted friends and neighbors, getting a home alarm system and making your home appear occupied. Many people are victimized each year, and it pays to take steps to ensure the safety of your home and family. Find the right tools to protect your home today.
