Computer Aid Newsletter 2

Hi ,

Welcome to the second Computer Aid newsletter.

I have been busy these last 6 months, which is why its taken me 6 months (instead of 3 months) to publish this newsletter.

Windows 8 & Windows XP end of life reminder

Since my last newsletter, Microsoft have released Windows 8.

Based on various feedback, my suggestion is to avoid buying a new windows 8 computer... at the moment, its too confusing for most people.

I am still able to build computers with windows 7, but I don't know how much longer I can do it, before I'm forced to sell computers with Windows 8. Many retailers have already sold out of windows 7 computers, so soon, you will no longer have that choice.

At the other end of the market, Microsoft is still planning to turn off support for windows XP in April 2014. So if you still have a windows XP computer, then "yesterday" is the best time to upgrade...

I have mostly upgraded to Windows 7, and I probably will stick with it until a better windows 8.1 or "windows 9" is released.

Tablets

In case you don't know what a computer tablet is, the best description would be: a cross between a smart phone and a laptop.

Tablets are becoming popular as replacements for laptops. They are lightweight and easily carried with you, and they allow you to do many computer and internet tasks (eg games, email, facebook, web browsing) while on-the-go

What types of tablets can you get? At the moment, there a 2 main sizes:

  • 7 inch displays
  • 10 inch displays

Also, there are 3 types of "operating software" available:

  • IOS (used on ipads, ipods, and iphones)
  • Android (used by Samsung, Acer, and many others)
  • Windows (used by a small number of companies, with windows 8... so avoid for now)

Advantages of tablets:

  • display is larger than mobile phones, but smaller than most laptops
  • Weight (300 - 700 grams) mobile phones are about 100 - 200 grams, laptops are about 1500 - 3000 grams (1.5 to 2.5 kilos)
  • Connect to the internet via WiFi
  • Some tablets have SIM card slots, so that they use the 3G network to access the internet directly
  • Simple to use (compared to laptops)... most kids can learn to use tablets long before they learn to use laptops.
  • Price. between AUD$150 & AUD$300 will buy a good quality tablet

Disadvantages of tablets:

  • Very difficult to print from a tablet
  • Some software (eg accounting software) is not yet available
  • Storage space is more limited (eg 32GB for a tablet, 1000GB for a laptop)
  • More difficult to use as a phone.
  • Small screen (compared to a desktop or laptop computer) can be difficult for some people.

Thanks for reading.

Best regards,

Luigi
