5 Great Messengers for Windows Posted: 23 Apr 2010 06:44 PM PDT Few days back, a friend of mine asked me that he has multiple IM accounts and if there is any instant messaging client in which he can manage all the accounts rather than installing different software for each account e.g Yahoo, Hotmail etc.
I thought why not make a list of software which can help you login with multiple accounts at the same time. I have gathered a list of best IM clients for Windows Xp, Windows 7 which can be used. 1. Digsby: This is one of the best IM clients I have used so far. It enables you to login to all the IM services and even social networks like Facebook, MySpace etc. I tried many different clients if someone asks me which one to use, I will definitely recommend Digsby. Main features include manage multiple IM accounts, manage conversations with tabbed conversation windows, chat history, manage emails and much more. Read: Digsby= IM + Email + Social Networking 2. Pidgin: Pidgin is an easy to use and free chat client with multilingual support. With Pidgin, you can connect to AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MXit, MySpaceIM, and Zephyr. One great thing about pidgin is that it comes with support for extensions. You can improve the functionality of Pidgin by installing simple plug-ins. Read: Multi-Protocol Desktop based messengers 3. Meebo: I know what you people are wondering. Meebo is an online IM client which means that you don't have to install anything on your computer and you can login directly from the web and manage different chat accounts all at one place. With Meebo, you can keep in touch with friends across dozens of IM platforms, including AIM, Yahoo!, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, MySpace IM, Facebook Chat, and more. You can even install Meebo Bar with which you can share different stories with your friends on Twitter and Facebook. If you are a blog owner you can update your blog's fan page directly from Meebo without opening facebook. Read: Meebo, Web based IM Client 4. Miranda: Miranda is another multi-protocol instant messaging client for Windows which support AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Facebook Chat, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, IRC, Jabber, Netsend and many more. I haven't personally tried this software but few people recommended me to try this software. The best thing about Miranda IM is that its portable. You don't have to install it in your pc in order to use it. Like Pidgin, it also comes with plugin support and you can download plugins from a gallery of over 350 plugin. 5. eBuddy: This software needs no introduction. It's one of the best IM client for mobile devices and even its web messenger is excellent allowing you to login to chat of multiple services including MSN, Yahoo, Aim, Gtalk, Facebook, ICQ and MySpace. All you have to do is open eBuddy.com and login to the desired protocol. Simple and easy. 6. Trillian: I got to know about this one few days back and surprisingly, I downloaded the software to try it out because of its simple and clean interface. It comes with support for many protocols and social bookmarking/networking sites as well. The reason I download it because it even support Skype as well. I have tried almost all the clients I wrote about except Miranda. If you know about any other good IM client which I didn't mentioned, please share with us in the comments section. ReactOS: Free, Opensource alternative to Windows! A Preview. Posted: 23 Apr 2010 06:58 AM PDT This is a guest post by Tushar, if you like to write for Devils’ Workshop, do read Devils’ Workshop revenue sharing program. We all know about free Linux based operating systems, free open-source office and graphics softwares, and so on! Open-source softwares are future of computing software! No doubt! But open-source does not only mean Free. It also means for better quality, higher reliability, flexibility, lower cost, reviewing & contributing to the development process! Few days back I came across this new OS called ReactOS. This OS is based on Windows NT architecture. Which means that you can install your existing Windows device drivers & softwares on this OS. I have followed it up since then. Recently when I checked, I found that the development has come a long way since I first saw. And I thought of sharing with you. I am specifically writing this post to let all software developers know about it and take part in this project development if they can. It happens so many times & we hate Windows for frequently annoying us. Sometimes a developer may feel like doing something about it, but one can not (unless works for MS). So if you’re a software developer then you too can contribute for development of this OS. Click here to know more. What is this ReactOS? Click here to read about ReactOS I first downloaded the ReactOS Live CD to preview prior to the installation. But somehow I could not preview completely as few areas are yet to be implemented in a live cd version. You may download ReactOs Live cd here. As of now the ReactOS seems very lightweight and fast! Installation ISO which I downloaded is only 46.5 MB in size. I was surprised. Final release size may vary as the project develops. You can download installation ISO of ReactOs here. I installed ReactOS through VirtualBox. I purposely avoided installing it on my current hardware so that I do not disturb any ongoing projects, just in case anything goes wrong! Unfortunately because of this, I could not install any device driver nor any Windows software I am using. Installation was quick. The installation process and post installation user interface look very similar to Windows. It also offers multiple desktops as we see in Ubuntu or Fedora. ReactOS definitely needs more robust development to be able to reach to the practicality benchmarks & improvements set by popular open-source operating systems we know. Few screen-shots here ReactOS website has plenty of screen-shots to show you. See them here Below is a video of screen-shots to show you how it looked at my end! According to me, this is a great beginning of something that I never thought will ever exist. I would really like to use this OS if it works great, but let’s wait for some more time until they say ReactOS is ready for daily use. Please Note:

Apple Vs Adobe: No Flash on iPhone OS, again. Posted: 23 Apr 2010 06:39 AM PDT The news is finally out yesterday! Adobe won’t spend any more time in making Flashavailable for development on Apple’s iPhone OS! The statement came after Apple changed their developer program license for iPhone OS 4, disallowing development of applications with anything else than approved by Apple. (which includes Adobe’s tool) Non availability of Flash plug-in is a major (may be – only) minus point with iPhone and all the iPhone users were eagerly waiting to see it in the next version of the OS. It all started when, Adobe announced their next version of Flash – a part of Creative Suite 5 which supports application development for iPhones, iPod Touch and iPads and Apple announced iPhone OS 4 with modified developer license as said above. Adobe’s prime reason for a strong reaction is fairly understandable as they have spent huge amount of time and money in creating Flash-to-iPhone tool. Apple on the other hand is very skeptical about Flash in general. They are not very happy with the way Flash works on Mac OS for their desktops and laptops. They further said that Flash is very buggy, insecure, resource hogger and they would not like such platform to be used on iPhone OS. While the cold war continues between two giants in their respective industry, iPhone users will have to wait even more to see Flash websites & applications on iPhone. I wish the war ends soon! Do let us know your view about Apple Vs Adobe war?
