In many of our services, specially – Blogger To WordPress Migration Service, we move domains from a server to another server at times. In this migration process, most crucial phase in change in DNS records.

Time taken to reflect changes in DNS records varies from few hours to few days. It depends on many things like domain registrar, physical location of nameservers, your ISP caching, local system caches and many other things.

All above factors. makes it hard to check to trust local ping command which will only reflect a domains information at your end.

To overcome these problems, we use a free web-based service – just-ping.com

About Just-ping.com

On just-ping.com, you simply enter domain-name and click ping button.

It displays domain status, IP address of domain if reachable, from different locations of the world.

Also link to the result page can be bookmarked, in case you want to share it with your client. Their URL structure is like below:

http://just-ping.com/index.php?vh=devilsworkshop.org

Just replace devilsworkshop.org with domain name you want.

You can also ping IP addresses if you need.

What if domain doesn’t resolve as expected at your end?

It may happen that, even if just-ping shows desired results world-wide, site may not be working as expected on your end.

Possible reasons for this can be:

Local DNS cache – Flushing DNS cache on machine may help
Network cache – if your machine is in corporate network, behind firewall or proxy, then network elements may have their own local caches
ISP cache – some ISP maintains their own cache. In this case using something like OpenDNS or Google DNS may help.

Use Microsoft Word 2007 as a Blogging Tool

There are many softwares (Windows Live Writer, BlogDesk etc) that serve as an alternative for publishing posts on your blog. But do you know that you can use Microsoft Word to publish or even save posts offline?

In order to use Microsoft Word as a blogging tool, follow the simple guide below.

1. Open Microsoft Word. Click on the Office button and select New. It will open a new window, just select New Blog Post and click Create.

2. It will ask you to register your blog account. Click on Register Now.

3. Now, select the blog provider. In my case I selected Wordpress.

4. It will ask you to enter the url and login information of the blog on which you want to publish the post. Fill in the details and click OK.

5. It will show you a popup showing that your account registration was successful.

6. Now you can post on the blog using Microsoft Word.

7. You can manage multiple blogs using Microsoft Word. Click on Manage Accounts and then click on New. Follow the instructions as in previous steps and it will add other blog accounts as well.

If you spend a lot of time front of your computer screen and much of it is dedicated to surfing the internet thanks to browsers then you might like this one. Chrome browser has an extension which allowed me to use the browser with mouse gestures.

Mouse gestures are very interesting as it actually allows you to open a tab, go back, forward, scroll down or up without the tradition keystrokes or using the browser interface. Mouse gestures carry out these task based on how you are moving the mouse.

About Chrome’s Smooth Gestures

This as you know by now, works only with Chrome browser. The extension has gestures which are supported for Page navigation and Tab Management.
Also with some simply gestures you can look up cookies, source code and also the options page.
These mouse gestures can be used by holding down the right click button.
Another great feature is these mouse gestures can be synced with your Google account just like your sync bookmarks on Chrome.

I have been using Chrome browser with this extension and one of the main advantage found out is that there is no use for looking up keyboard keys or icons on the browser and all you really have to remember are the gestures which is a piece of cake one you start using it.
