How To Enable Applications to Always Run as Administrator

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 11:43 PM PDT

Occasionally you may find the need to make an application run as Administrator every time you open it. This is a very simple little tip, but useful nonetheless.

Note: Be cautious about the types of applications you run as Administrator, as this gives the application permission to potentially change important system files.

Procedure:

1. Right click the application you want to always run in administrator mode and select Properties.

2. The Properties dialogue box appears, navigate to the Compatability tab.

3. Under the heading Privilege level, tick the check box Run this program as an administrator. Click OK to apply the changes.

From now on, whenever you click that shortcut, the application will run as Administrator (and depending on your security settings, will likely prompt you for confirmation).

sirfef.y is very difficult to remove

Posted: 23 Sep 2012 11:45 PM PDT

Back in June 2012, I was looking at an infected PC, and after running Malwarebytes, it looked like the PC was clean.

But after a restart, Microsoft Security Essentials reported that it had found sirfef.y, and that it would remove it.

After removal, the computer would give a 60 second grace period before restarting.

I first thought that the 60 seconds was MSE forcing a restart.

But it was actually sirfef.y restarting the PC to prevent anything from removing it.

Since sirfef.y is a rootkit, most standard security tools struggle to remove it.

I tried a few different tools (all had to be run from safe mode, to avoid the 60 seconds before a reboot), but tdsskiller and a few others either wouldn’t detect it, or would not be able to remove it.

After a lot of research, I eventually had to use a tool like gmer… then interpret the results, and then manually remove the rootkit files responsible for the infection.

Certainly not something an average (or even an advanced) PC user would be able to do.

With infections like this on the rise, I’m starting to wonder how much worse this can get, and if the PC security companies can do anything to improve their products, to defend against this type of infection?

Keyboard shortcut of the week: Sub- and Superscript

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 09:02 AM PDT

Occasionally we have to make use of subscripts or superscripts in our documents. The most common use of these is with dates, as in 20th. There the 'th' is a superscript; that is, smaller text that is raised. Subscripts are most often used in technical language such as if we refer to water as H2O. There the subscript is the '2'; smaller text that is lowered.

To switch to subscript mode or to change the selected text to a subscript, hold down the Control key and press the = key. This same combination will also set selected subscript text back to normal and switch out of subscript mode, as with the keyboard shortcuts for bold or italic mode.

To switch to superscript mode or to change the selected text to a superscript, hold down the Control key and the Shift key, and then press the + key. As with subscripts the same combination switches back to normal text to if presses again.

This tip applies to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, but unfortunately not to Excel.
